My Japanese 103 course is over, (I highly recommend this course to anyone serious about learning Japanese!) and I can't wait to start the 104 in January of 2025.

Below are my notes from the last two classes.

Week 09

Expressing Prohibition

(Short negative form) ない + でください

Example:

• 食べる = 食べないでください。
• 写真を撮る = 写真を撮らないでください。

Obligation

(Short negative form) ない + きゃいけません。

Example:

• 食べなきゃいけません。
• 写真を撮らなきゃいけません。

Don't have to

なくてもいいです

Example:

• お酒を飲まなくてもいいです。
• 勉強しなくてもよかったです。 (past)

Week 10

Noun + ができる

Example:

• 私は料理ができます。
• 私は日本語ができます。

Verb + ことができる

Example:

• ギターを弾くことできますか。
  • いいえ、あまりできません。

Musical Instruments (楽器)

• 弾く (ひく)
  • For stringed instruments (guitar, violin, piano, etc)
  • Example: ギターを弾く。
• 吹く (ふく)
  • For wind instruments (flute, sax, etc)
  • Example: サックスを吹く。
• 叩く (たたく)
  • For percussion instruments, hit (drums, taiko, tambourine)
  • Example: ドラムを叩く。

Talking about hobbies

Dictionary form + ことです。

Example:

• 写真を撮ることです。
• 本を読むことと、映画を見ることです。(For multiples, use ことと)
